Goodbye to Public Speaking class

Yesterday was our last day of Public Speaking class. It ended with full of laughter as always. Our lecturer, Mr. Edwin always cracked funny jokes, making funny expressions and movements. If you don’t want to mess with him, you better be punctual and tell him earlier that you cannot make it to his class. If not you will get six words from him, “What the heck is… doing?” LOL. But after that, he will put on his smiley face as he told us he had difficulty in showing serious expression.

We had to prepare a speech for a special occasion during tutorial. He gave us topics and we had to choose and prepare a speech regarding on that particular topic. My topic was “Give a closing speech during a Hostel Annual Dinner. Share your happy/sad memory about your fellow hostel mate.” We were put into a group of 5 and only given less than 2 minutes to finish our speech. Edwin will then ring his ‘ice cream bell’, lol.

After 5 of us presented to each other, we had to choose a member from our own respective group whom we think gave the best speech. At first, three of us were pointing at Teng ma. As Edwin approaching us, our fingers changed direction by pointing at Michelle instead. Mich was so busted and said “Woii… you all ahh… (taking off her sweater).”

She indeed gave a very good speech and even dragged Susu to give an acceptance speech as Mich acknowledged Susu as something like Pizza King. So Edwin asked Susu to give an acceptance speech which was darn funny. Susu accepted his ‘award’ and as he expressed his emotion, he then dragged Sharwin to give a speech too as he thanked him (Sifu Sharwin) for guiding him to be a Pizza King.

Before we said goodbye to Edwin, we took group photos and was cheated by Edwin. He told us not to smile and be serious. As I checked out the photos, he was the only one showing off his ‘rabbit teeth’, HAHA. After that, we shook hands with him and BYEBYE.

Edwin taught us a lot of techniques of Public Speaking and I really had fun in his class although I still felt nervous every time I have presentations. We do not need to sit for final exam on Public Speaking as our marks will be allocated through our 3 presentations, one test and one outline. I remember during the first day of Public Speaking, he told us we do not have final exam on this. We were all freak out and demand to have final exam as we think we might score better by memorizing the theories. But now, I feel that presentations are enough to access each of us.

The most frightening presentation was impromptu speech. We only had 2 minutes to prepare our introduction, conclusion and three main points. The speech must be less than 5 minutes. I was so, so nervous and pray to God to give me a good topic, bless me, bless me! So, I hand picked the topic “Blood.” “What can you think of blood?” I only thought of ‘blood keeps us alive, blood helps us to find our long lost parents through DNA’ and another one??? Geezzz… thanks to Shan, she was outside and told me that Korean couples use blood to test and see whether they are match. I was not sure about this but I have no choice but to cross my fingers and present something which I don’t know. Luckily one of my audience who is Ian, back up my point by saying, “Ya, Ya, they do that.” Phewww… rub sweat…

My second presentation was 10 minutes persuasive speech. I am presenting on “Students should get a tertiary education because…” I think I can do better on that presentation. I was very well prepared as I memorise everyday and every 3-4 hours. On that day, I presented like a machine gun. Well, what to do, I live with my name, “Machine = May Shing.” I presented way too fast and my friends told me, they were shocked at the same time impressed because I didn’t stumble. My speech ended only 6 minutes + and my marks was deducted because we have to present at least 7 minutes minimum. When I practice at home, it took me 9 minutes! Maybe during practice, I pause and think… On that day, I was so nervous and just shoot everybody in one ‘breath.’ “Nobody should stay alive”, muahahahaha. =.=lll

The last presentation was demonstrative presentation. It was a group of at least 4 members. Because our tutorial group is not even number, so my group has 5. Our first topic was “How should you behave when you go for an interview.” We had already planned what and how to demo, what to wear etc. But Edwin said, “I saw that before, choose another one.” So we chose “Easy Massage.” He said, “I’ve seen it before. Your seniors did that already.” Bl**dy f**l… I tak boleh tahan and told him, “Sir, you’ve seen it before, but our audience which is our friends didn’t see it before. Can lah sir…” He asked, “What are your massages?” We told him this, this, this, this and THIS! Then he said, “Okay lah, this will be my last massage demonstrative topic.” “Yippyyy… Thank you Sir.” Haha.

I really enjoy this demonstrative presentation especially our friends demonstrating on food. As you know… we get to have free lunch after that, lol. In my tutorial group, only one group presented on food where we have ‘Banana Choc’, ‘Bergourt with cheese and ham,’ ‘Raw tomato Tuna chilli onion’ and last but not least ‘Mango Blossom ice cream.’ These 4 dishes were very new to me and look easy to prepare. Another team prepared Chinese tea which I missed it as I went to watch F1. While tutorial 2 is lucky as they are all talented ‘chefs.’ All four teams prepared different type of food. Such as Indian sweets, dumpling rice, salad and Nyona kuih.

So, these are some of my wonderful memories during Public Speaking class. I love Friday compare to other days. Below is a picture of Tutorial 1 with ever smiling Mr. Edwin. ManU versus Sunderland now, ciao =D
